If there is one thing you HAVE to do over the holidays, it’s visit the German Christmas Market in downtown Vancouver!
Start with filling your Christmas mug (pay a $4 refundable deposit for the mugs) with either hot Gluehwein (mulled wine) or the Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with Rum!). Then wander and eat and shop. Choose from The Baked Potato hut; The Sausage hut (personal favourite is the currywurst); Artisan Bake Shoppe offering fresh Rum or Marzipan Stollen; Das Waffelhaus; The traditionally melted Raclette on a bun with Bündnerfleisch (cured meat) – a Swiss tradition; Experience a bit of Oktoberfest with freshly roasted Chicken & Pork Knuckles; and a new favourite Schupfnudeln – hand rolled noodles mixed with Sauerkraut. You can easily spend a lot, but it’s a fun experience as the food is really good!
You can visit stalls with ornaments made in Germany to Peachland (with a German twist) – for cute ideas for your tree; There were hand-made soaps from Dam Good Soap (www.damgoodsoap.com) Co. in Steveston; Steingut (Stoneware mugs from Germany); Sonnentor (Olde Tea Haus) from Austria – offering some delicious teas; Handmade jewelery and knit hats; and warm and beautifully made scarves from Alpaca wool at (Fair-Tradewinds.com).
Pick up some unique Christmas gifts or just eat, drink and wander.
But Dress warm!
