There is definitely a trend occurring not just in Vancouver, but around the world. It’s gourmet vegetarian, vegan and raw food cafes and restaurants. It’s a welcome addition to our food scene as it offers everyone a variety. I’ve met many people who poo-poo the idea of vegan or vegetarian, but what they are missing out on is gourmet creations that have amazing flavours and local ingredients. And it’s not a bad idea to take a break from meat sometimes!
The newest arrival is Graze. A vegan restaurant serving local gourmet cuisine along Fraser Street on the East side. It’s got a fresh atmosphere and style, a lovely menu and fantastic wines as well! And keep this in mind, on Wednesdays they offer a $5 corkage fee for bringing in your own wine.
My recent visit had me quite excited. I love to discover gourmet vegetarian to see what a chef can do. Although I could have easily ordered a few things, I had to limit my first visit. For starters I had their melon/watermelon gazpacho soup with some spice – oh my, it was ….fantastic! Then my friend ordered the Gluten Free Perogies (made of buckwheat and chia seeds) filled with yams and carmelized onions, quite tasty. But I went for more of a comfort dish – Saffroni Stew of cannelli beans and vegetables and it was full of flavour, just what I was craving!
The wine list is equally fantastic with a selection from BC and around the world which I think is a perfect match to all their dishes. Plus they are making creative cocktails too. And the restaurant was full the entire evening! Good sign 😉
