The day Tacofino brought their food truck to the streets of Vancouver – was a happy day for this fish taco loving gal. Even better, was when they opened their commissary on Hastings St. in the East Village!
It’s casual, yet it has so much ambiance, with their air plants hanging with the lights from the ceiling; white washed walls; reclaimed chunky wood tables and stools. It really does have the feel of a just put together fish shack (in a modern way I suppose). As well, this neighbourhood has really got lots to offer! Next door Try Platform 7 Coffee(made to look like you’re in the Tube in London); for tea the Steam Tea House (Vancouver’s tiniest tea shop) across the street in Donalds Market; Other brunch spots are The Red Wagon Cafe, Campagnolo Roma, Bolivian Saltenas, Jackalope’s Dive and East Side Cafe. All discovered recently from a culinary tour I took with Off The Eaten Track!
Tacofino is known for starting the craze for Fish Tacos from their little food truck in Tofino, BC. But they also make an amazingly good Tortilla Soup with chicken in the winter. But now that spring is here and summer is around the corner – it’s off the list to make room for refreshing, tasty tacos. Order the tacos with a flour or corn tortilla, and you can enjoy the Yam with bonito flakes, Deep Fried Fish with salsa fresca or Tuna with wakame and wasabi mayo – to name my favourites. Or choose a Burrito or Torta (mexican sandwich). And then, after you wipe the salsa juices off your clothes, face, and down your arm – under your shirt, sit back and relax as you sip a local beer, house-made sangria or specialty cocktail they offer. The flavours here are very fulfilling, portions are satisfying and it’s definitely worth multiple visits.
