For all those British Pub lovers out there, you will be very happy to know about this gem. The Fat Badger took over the house Le Gavroche French Restaurant spent many years in. It’s just one block east of Denman on Alberni St. and is far bigger than it looks. A choice of a cute outdoor patio, or indoor tables which are lower or slightly higher – make it a great place for dinner or after work drinks with your friends.
It’s got that darker atmosphere just like a British pub, but with a modern feel and minus the british accents of course.
Recently, myself and a friend took a seat at the bar, waiting for a table. However, we decided to stay as it’s a place of fun conversations with bartenders and other patrons. The beer and wine menu have a great variety at very decent prices, I was able to confirm this with my beer friend, and well, I confirm the prices and variety for the wine :). Order a stout on tap or a black and tan, or choose a great glass of new or old world wine for around $8, plus some cocktails (I skipped over that section actually).
On the food front, I would have to say, I was kind of expecting deep-fried hell. 🙂 However, it’s a bonus when the owner is a well-respected and talented chef who owns Espana, as you get a creative British Pub menu. For example, how do you make a burger into an appetizer? You make slider. How do they make British Yorkshire puddings into an appetizer? You make mini yorkshire puddings with roast beef and gravy into a trio with horseradish cream. What a fun plate of comfort food! Next up, was zucchini carpaccio with spiced deep-fried peas (think dry wasabi pea style), homemade paneer cheese and indian spices. One word, delicious. My flavour craving was satisfied, and it was light and almost refreshing. However, the only sad thing is that the menu will change weekly so there is no guarantee you’ll get the same dish again or soon. The plus to that is the kitchen team stays creative and you’ll get whats seasonal and fresh, the minus side is when you are craving THAT specific dish…you may not get it. That said, I will happily try their other dishes, like the whole grilled sea bass (for 2-3 people) done Jamie Oliver family style (that’s until another fishy jumps in and takes its place) or the indian chicken poutine!
Two thumbs up for this new Pub!
